CATS FOR REHOMING

f you have a cat to be rehomed, the first thing you should do is telephone the two big adoption centres in the area – Cats Protection Adoption Centre at Long Lane – 01332.824950 – and Ashbourne Animal Welfare (known as the Ark) – 01335.300494. Both of these centres have long waiting lists and you could wait up to 3 months for a place to become available. However, if your case is desperate, one of the centres may be able to take the cat(s) within days.

In the case of an abandoned or mistreated cat, you should telephone the RSPCA. Their Abbey Street shelter telephone number is 01332.344620 and their national helpline number is 0870.5555999.

Advertising in newspapers or online for new homes for animals is not recommended. A discreet advertisement in vets or pet shops is only recommended if the potential new owners are thoroughly investigated – both before and after the adoption.

The Derby & District Cats Protection branch has various people to help you through the process of rehoming your cat (or perhaps a stray cat you have found). The Admissions Officer can give you more information on the adoption process and perhaps provide transport to take the cat to its new temporary home. We also have a small team of volunteers who can trap the cat to take it to a vet for bloodtesting, treatment or neutering/spaying. It is emphasised, though, that if there is no place available for the cat at an adoption centre, the cat will have to be returned to site after it has been seen by the vet while it waits for a place.

Neutering or spaying is free and can be done while your cat waits to go to an adoption centre.

Please telephone the Catline (voice mail) on 01332.206956 if you need any help with rehoming.
