Cats Protection has claimed a prestigious Golden Twit Award in recognition of its successful use of social networking site Twitter.
The national cat charity was named a winner alongside a glittering line-up of Britain’s top Tweeters including comedian Alan Carr and leading sports statisticians, Opta.
Past winners of the awards, which celebrate the best in ‘Twittering’, include The Guardian, Manchester City Football Club and Dragon’s Den’s Duncan Bannatyne.
Tom Briggs, Cats Protection’s Digital Communications Officer said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have won the award. Our Twitter following has grown significantly over the last year and we have had some great successes as a result.
“For instance, we ran a Black Cat Awareness Day on 27 October, to encourage owners to adopt a black cat from Cats Protection, and successfully got the campaign trending which was no mean feat – at one point it was the third most talked-about topic among UK users, even beating Justin Bieber!
“We have plenty more up our sleeves for 2012, so would love more people to follow us and join in the fun.”
The Golden Twits is an annual event judged by members of BRATS - The British Academy of Twits. Past winners include Eamonn Holmes, Stephen Fry and Compare the Meerkat’s Aleksander Orlov.
